The power lines now run on the old carriage road that would have brought travelers to and from Wells River. On the other side of this steep grade would have been Jeremiah's tavern, a nice spot to get out, rest the horses, and quench one's thirst...

 

 

This view shows the opposite perspective, looking northward from Ingalls Hill, following the old carriage road over the hills to nearby Wells River. This route continued to serve as the "Old Route 5" until the 1930's. The current Rte. 5 is situated along the river.

This lot belonged to Dr. Gideon Smith, adopted father of Jeremiah' wife Mary Bigelow.

Smith, an influential figure of the time, gave the young couple the land for their homestead and sponsored Jeremiah to become a deacon in the church.
