Minutes from the 2006 All-day Singing

"a gracious rain..."

2nd “Connexion” and Jeremiah Ingalls Singing
Newbury, Vermont

Highlights from the 2006 Singing...

Honor to the Hills This setting of the Capt. Kidd ballad formula expresses the reverence for the divine as expressed through nature, a unifiying theme of Ingalls' folk hymn settings. The 1792 text is by Elder Hibbard and is also found in a popular variant called Capt Kid. As such it has been sung by Bread and Puppet as part of their tradition.

Naragansit The text is by Samson Occum, a Native-American author and one of the founders of Dartmouth college. The air is a variant of a popular 18th century song called THE INDIAN PHILOSOPHER. It depicts the final walk of Jesus towards the cross in quite graphic terms.

Narrow Space by S.R. Pennick This setting was included in the Appendix to the 2005 ed. of Ingalls' Christian Harmony by Tom Malone. It is taken from the 1859 ed. of The Sacred Harp. The text is one that Ingalls also set in an E minor tune called Born to Die. Pennick's A major setting is majestic and monolithic suggesting the insignificance of man in conversation with the infinite. Variants of this air are called CONVERSE.

Judgement Hymn One of the redicovered gems of Ingalls collection, the tune is a variant of FULFILLMENT and PARTING FRIENDS in The Sacred Harp. The extreme vocal ranges of each part creat e a sweeping texture, while the clashing sharp and natural passing tones, yeild an unarguably personal yet apocolyptic folk-baroque masterpiece.

BaltimoreOnly two compositions by Ingalls are known to exist outside of what was included in his 1805 publication. PENNSYLVANNIA has come back to the modern shape-note singing tradition through its inclusion in the Northern Harmony. BALTIMORE, has never appeared in a modern collection until now, and this is likely the first time it has ever been led at an All-day Singing. A premiere of sorts......

Farewell Hymn (in memoriam Margaret MacArthur) Tony Barrand, who has been a prime mover in the revival of Ingalls music in Vermont over the last 26 years, led this in homor of Margaret MacArthur, the Vermont folk-song scholar who passed away suddenly this year. The text instructs that we should "rejoice with grief and mourn with joy." Even the rain became solemn, & the music did the rest.
